Roles in an energy project

Who is actually working for you?

Three quotes, three different solutions, and every party says theirs is the best. Sound familiar?

With a battery, a solar roof or a bigger grid connection, you have many parties at the table. Most of them supply something to you, and that is fine. But someone has to sit on your side. Flexergy is an independent developer: we work for the investor and owner, and for no one else.

Who is at the table

Six contracts, one owner

As the owner, you sign a separate contract with each party. Those contracts have to fit together, or your business case falls between the cracks. We prepare them and negotiate on your behalf.

Your side of the table

Investor and ownerPays, signs and carries the risk. Often that is you, sometimes an external investor on your site.

The other side of the table

  • maintenance contractO&M providerOperates and maintains after handover
  • supply contractEnergy supplierSupplies power and takes it back
  • metering contractMetering companyMeasures your use and shares the data
  • connection and transport agreementGrid operatorConnects you and provides transport
  • appointment (NEN 3140)Installation managerSafeguards the installation
You sign with each party separately. We sit on your side of the table and make sure all agreements fit together.

Who is up when

We work until the contract is signed

The most important choices are made in the first two phases. That is where we sit beside you. After that, the party you chose builds.

The roles one by one

What they do, how they earn and what to watch

What does the investor and owner do?

The business itself, or a party that invests on your site

Your role
What they do
The investor and owner pays for the investment, becomes owner of the installation and signs all contracts.
How they earn
The savings and revenue of the installation, over its full lifetime.
Watch out
You carry the risk if something disappoints. Make sure choices are made in your interest, not a seller’s.

What does a developer do?

At Flexergy: independent and advice only

This is us
What they do
A developer takes an energy project from idea to signed contract: analysing meter data, working out options, building the business case, preparing the grid application and subsidy, setting requirements and selecting the right parties.
How they earn
With us: only from your assignment. We sell no installations or energy contracts.
Watch out
Many developers belong to an installer, supplier or investor. Always ask who they work for.

What does an EPC contractor do?

Engineering, Procurement, Construction

Supplies you
What they do
An EPC contractor makes the technical design, buys the components and builds the installation. Delivers everything in one go, with guarantees.
How they earn
The construction contract.
Watch out
Quotes can only be compared if the requirements are fixed in advance. Otherwise you are comparing three different installations.

What does an O&M provider do?

Operations and maintenance

Supplies you
What they do
An O&M provider keeps the installation running after handover: monitoring, maintenance and fixing faults.
How they earn
A maintenance contract, usually annual.
Watch out
Fix availability and response times. A battery that is down for a week absorbs no peaks that week.

What does an energy supplier do?

Sometimes together with a separate trading party

Supplies you
What they do
An energy supplier delivers your power and takes back the power you feed in. With a battery, the flexibility you have is often traded as well.
How they earn
The margin on power and fixed fees. With trading, often a share of the revenue.
Watch out
A low price per kWh says little. Your contract decides whether you can benefit from prices that change every quarter hour.

What does a metering company do?

Technical term: accredited metering party

Supplies you
What they do
A metering company installs and manages the meter on your large-consumer connection and makes sure the data reaches the grid operator and supplier.
How they earn
A fee for the meter and the metering service.
Watch out
A battery, solar roof or charging site may need extra meters, for example for ERE certificates. Arrange this before construction. A contract with a metering company is also a condition for the Flex-e subsidy.

What does a grid operator do?

Regionally for example Liander, Stedin or Enexis; nationally TenneT

Regulated
What they do
A grid operator builds your connection, decides how much power you may draw and feed in, and manages the grid in your region.
How they earn
Regulated tariffs for connection and transport, supervised by the ACM.
Watch out
Apply for capacity in good time and ask about alternative contract forms. In many regions the waiting time is years.

What does an installation manager do?

In Dutch: installatieverantwoordelijke (IV), under NEN 3140 and NEN-EN 50110

To be appointed
What they do
On behalf of the owner, the installation manager is ultimately responsible for the safe condition and safe use of the electrical installation.
Who it is
Often one of your own staff, otherwise a hired specialist.
Watch out
A battery or new transformer falls under this too. Agree before handover who takes on this role.

Why independent

What goes wrong when no one sits on your side

“Three quotes, three stories.”

Every party calculates with its own assumptions. We fix what you need in advance, so you compare like with like.

“The contracts don’t fit together.”

A battery without a matching supply contract or grid agreement does not pay for itself. We look after the whole.

“No one said we didn’t need it.”

A seller earns nothing from advising you not to buy. We simply tell you when that is better for you.
